Proper integration of roof flashings with siding
In 2004 & 2005, I served on a Home Builder's Association task force for the specific purpose of composing a "Best Practices" manual, which in part, was drafted to provide guidelines for the proper integration of siding with the roof flashings to assure water is diverted to the exterior of siding. The failure of siding & roof flashings to properly integrate is a prevalent problem nationwide and often results in serious damage to the home. The problem is typically a direct result of either the roofing installer or the siding installer (whoever completed their work "last") lacking the knowledge or desire to properly integrate their scope of work with the other contractors completed installation. For example, if a roof has been installed on a home being newly constructed, several weeks or months may pass before the stucco siding is installed. In those instances it is the stucco siding contractor's responsibility to see that the previously installed roof flashings properly integrate with the siding they are installing. However, if the carpenters were to install lap siding on a home being newly constructed "before" the roof is installed, it would be the roofing contractor's responsibility to see that the roof flashings properly integrate with the previously installed siding. Regardless of who is responsible, it is very important that roof flashings divert water to the exterior of siding in order to avoid potential damage. So, if you need a new roof and want to be sure the flashings properly divert water to the exerior of siding or have an otherwise good roof that you are concerned may have flashing problems, you should give us a call. We have the knowledge, the know how, and the desire to assure your roof flashings are properly integrated with the siding.
