Snow & Ice Present Major Problems
If you haven't encountered any leaks since the blizzard that passed through our area over the Christmas weekend, you should consider yourself fortunate. A majority of homes have in fact remained leak free, but a fair share of homeowners were not so fortunate as significant leak problems attributable to snow infiltration and ice damming have been observed. Key factors including prolonged heavy snow fall, blizzard category winds, & record low temperatures have all contributed to the ideal conditions necessary to promote snow infiltration of attics & ice damming on roofs. The key issues to consider are: *ice damming & snow infiltration are not typically due to a "fault" with the roof's installation. *Certain work can be completed (when the weather allows) which "may" help or prevent further problems (baffles inside vent openings, heat tape along eaves & gutters, ice barrier underlayment, increased intake & exhaust ventilation, increased attic insulation, etc). *Minimize interior damage by removing snow from the attic before temperatures climb above freezing and if conditions are safe to do so remove ice from roof eaves taking care not to damage the roof.
