Ventilation
Why Ventilate?
- Heat – In hot weather (typical of Kansas City,) proper ventilation, prevents the attic from becoming a "hot box" that radiates unwanted heat down through the attic floor into the living area. Attic temperatures can reach 150 degrees.
- Moisture - Year round, proper ventilation helps prevent moisture from condensing on the insulation, rafters, and roof deck. Trapped moisture can rot wood members and rob insulation of its R-value.
- To Meet Shingle Warranty Requirements - Where ventilation is not adequate, shingles deteriorate twice as fast as shingles over well ventilated air spaces. With this in mind, shingle manufacturers void their warranties if their shingles are installed over improperly ventilated attics.
How do you determine the proper amount of ventilation necessary to meet the warranty requirements?
- One square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic space
- One half of the vent must be intake, and the other half should be exhaust.
We understand the importance of proper attic ventilation. Therefore, when you ask us for an estimate to replace your roof we calculate the approximate amount of ventilation necessary to adequately ventilate your attic.
If we determine the existing ventilation to be inadequate, we will provide you with the option to add additional ventilation.
We don't skimp on the quality of vents we furnish either. Yes, we could save a dollar and put on a cheap vent that the birds would love to nest in. Instead we routinely furnish and install top-of-the-line ventilators manufactured by Lomanco and Air Vent, Inc.
