Misconceptions about different types of roofing damage aren’t as harmless as they seem. When used as the basis for making important decisions concerning your roof, they can do more damage and even cost you in the long run.

Myths surrounding wind damage to roofing systems are particularly common. Larry L. Vaught Roofing, your trusted roofer, debunks some of the most widespread misconceptions about wind damage below:

  1. Wind Damage Isn’t Always Noticeable

Professional roofers should be able to spot the early warning signs, which are easily missed by the untrained eye. That’s why even if you haven’t noticed any signs of damage after a storm or extreme weather event, you should still schedule a roof inspection. By the time the more noticeable warning signs of wind damage appear, it’s already too late to mitigate roof damage. That’s why storm damage should be fixed as soon as possible.

  1. Shingles With Failed Adhesion Seals and Wind-Damaged Shingles Mean the Same Thing

Wind uplift is just one of several factors that can cause your shingles’ adhesion seal (which as the name suggests bonds shingles to each other to reduce the area exposed to wind) to fail.  Other factors that can cause your shingles’ adhesion seal to fail include dust or debris that may have gotten onto the adhesion strip, trees preventing sunlight from reaching the heat-sensitive adhesive on the adhesion seals or installation errors.

  1. Your Roof Should Be Okay As Long There Aren’t Any Leaks or Signs of Damage

As mentioned earlier, it’s easy to miss the warning signs of storm damage. That’s why, as a general rule, you should have your roof inspected after a storm or extreme weather event, regardless of whether it has leaks or not. The sooner storm damage to your roof is detected and fixed, the lower the risk it affects other parts of your home.

One more thing: always vet roofers before hiring them to make sure they don’t miss any warning signs of damage. Here’s a tip: the number of years a contractor has been in business should give you a good idea of their level of expertise.
