Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material used on single family and multi-family homes in the United States, including the materials used for roofing in Kansas City. This popularity is mostly due to the affordability, durability, and variety of styles and colors of asphalt shingles.
GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, Tamko, and Malarkey are the 5 asphalt shingle manufacturers who provide the vast majority of asphalt shingles to Kansas City roofing contractors. Each of these manufacturers has from 5 to 14 different styles of shingles with between 2 and 24 different colors available in each style. That adds up to well over 300 different manufacturer/style/color combinations to choose from. Larry Vaught Roofing predominately uses GAF products because of the superior warranties we can economically provide through GAF. We can and do install all of the other asphalt shingle manufacturers’ products when our customers prefer a particular style or color blend made by one of the other manufacturers.
Types of Asphalt Shingles
In general, asphalt shingles are typically categorized as 3-tab, architectural, or designer shingles. When asphalt shingles were invented in the early 1900’s, 3-tab shingles were all that was available. (Image Below) In the early 1970’s architectural shingles, like GAF’s Timberline were developed. (Image Below) The architectural style shingles now dominate the asphalt shingle market due to their almost unanimously preferred “look” when compared to 3-tab shingles. A decade or so after architectural shingles started their takeover of the asphalt shingle market, the first designer shingles were introduced. There are several different styles of designer shingle. In general, the asphalt shingle manufacturer’s were going for a cedar shake look with products like GAF’s Grand Sequoia (Image Below) or more of a slate shingle look with products like GAF’s Camelot II (Image Below) when they started producing designer shingles.
Aside from their vastly different look from architectural shingles, designer shingles are thicker and heavier weight than their architectural counterpart. The extra weight increased both the cost of the material and the labor to install designer shingles, so the “affordability” draw of the lighter weight asphalt shingles is significantly lessened with designer shingles.
CertainTeed Landmark shingles
CertainTeed Landmark are the same “architectural” type of shingle as GAF’s Timberline. They look virtually identical. Other types of architectural shingles include Tamko Heritage, Malarkey Legacy, and Owens Corning Oakridge.

Due to hail damage, we recently had our roof and gutters replaced by Larry L. Vaught Roofing. They did a great job for us. There are a lot of very good reviews for Larry L. Vaught Roofing- for a reason. They are a quality roofing contractor with quality employees who work hard, efficiently, professionally and safely. The office staff was really good to work with as well.
After we noticed several other neighbors getting their roofs replaced this past spring, I called Larry Vaught Roofing for an inspection. We used them in 2009 to replace our roof which was also due to hail damage. The inspection showed more than enough hail damage to meet insurance standards to have the roof replaced.
However, Auto-Owners Insurance denied our claim, not once but twice. Mike Vaught, the owner helped me navigate the insurance bad faith denials by giving me names of local forensic engineers. Our insurance company ultimately approved our claim but not without giving an initial low-ball ACV payment. Mike also pushed back on that and we then received a fair RCV settlement.
All the employees were very good to work with. Dan, the salesman answered all my questions about the roofing process and all materials options, from the class III shingle to options in underlayment, ice & water barrier, ventilation (soffit & ridge), drip edge, flashings, ridge caps, etc.
We are pleased to have a roof that will last for years, and pleased with our choice of having it installed by Larry L Vaught Roofing.

This company went above and beyond great service. Not only was their costumer service outstanding throughout our repair process, but the workers onsite were courteous and hard working. They spend an extra half hour (after the repair was completed) blowing my leaves and removing tree debris that had fallen in my yard after a wind storm the day before. I will definitely use them again!

I have used Larry L. Vaught Roofing, Inc., for roof maintenance and repairs in the past as well as for replacing a skylight, so they were the first company I thought of when it was time for a new roof. (Note: Before doing repairs, they actually told me I didn't need a new roof at the time. All that was needed was repairs. I really appreciated that!)
The time finally came for a new roof. They were definitely a hard-working crew! They got here at 7:30 a.m. and worked until 8:45 that night. We had a full day of rain that postponed the second day of the job, and I was a bit concerned about the possibility of water getting in since the job wasn't finished, but they made sure everything was in place to prevent that from happening. The new roof was finished roof mid-afternoon on the second day of work.
They cleaned up after they were done, and I haven't spotted any leftover nails in the driveway once the cleanup was done.
Special thanks to Dan Whitfield for his patience in answering my many questions and for coming out after the job to make sure I was happy with their work.

I received a roofing estimate from another company citing extensive damage to my roof and other areas of my home. I suspected the information I was receiving was inaccurate and called Vaught for a second opinion.
I was pleased to find out that my roof was in perfect condition and was not in need of replacement. Sean Strup was the inspector and provided me with detailed information regarding the condition of my roof. It was obvious to me that this company has high integrity standards for their employees and provided detailed information about the roof I have in place. Larry Vaught replaced our roof several years ago and I just realized I hadn’t left a review yet so wanted to take the opportunity to share how happy we were with the roof job, both at the time and still! Great communication, very high quality installation. I also appreciated that they didn’t use high pressure sales tactics - just honest answers from someone who knows a lot about roofing. We had the whole roof on our house and our shop replaced. Aside from finding the odd roofing nail (one in our tire), I would still use them again in the future. Communication was regular and awesome throughout the whole process, including when they came out to reroof. They have been very responsive to concerns and will send someone out quickly to address them (minor issues with fascia work). We're going be getting siding and windows replaced and they'll need to be on the roof for the 2nd story. When I called with concerns and questions about anything that might void the warranty and what should\can be done to minimize damage, both the office and Dan were incredibly responsive and helpful in addressing everything. Easily one of the best companies I've dealt with for home repairs in the KC metro.

From the first call I made to Vaught Roofing, we had the most pleasant experience. Dan a long time roofer himself showed up for the initial assessment and you could tell right away he knew what he was doing. after meeting with several different companies including others highly recommended by our neighbors we finally selected Vaught Roofing to take on the job. our roof of 19 + years had survived many hail storms which I am sure the previous home owners were not able to get approved for repair through their insurance. Larry's son Michael along with Dan and Tucker all went to work with our insurance company to secure the approval for roof replacement. After hail and wind damaged our roof earlier this year I called some local roofers for bids. Dan from Larry Vaught came out and gave me a very competitive bid and answered all of my questions. We set up a follow up to go over the details and that really sold me on Larry Vaught as a company. Very professional, knowledgeable, and prompt.
The crew came out and had it all done that day, finishing just as a thunderstorm rolled in. What a good test of a new roof! They came back the next morning to do another sweep of the yard and get all nails and any other debris. My roof looks great and I have piece of mind knowing Larry Vaught will be around to take care of me and honor their work and warranty.

Cost for insurance and repairs on our wood shingle roof were getting out of hand, and replacement was needed. I asked multiple companies to bid the replacement and Larry Vaught gave me the best combination of cost, quality and warranty. This was not a surprise because they have helped me with repairs and other roof work over the years. Their work is top notch, and they even scheduled around my painter's calendar. I love the new roof and gutters from Larry Vaught Roofing.

I was referred to Vaught roofing company, buy some very dear friends, as there was a problem on my roof with the flashing. These guys came, saw, and conquered all in a very short time and cleaned up after themselves when they were done. I cannot complement this company enough for their excellent work and polite Knowledgeable workmanship. I wouldn’t call anyone else but Vaught roofing.

Highly recommend! Chris came to our home and gave us a great price for what we wanted. There was no hard sales pitch or pushing us to get something we didn't want or need. The job started and ended quickly and the roofers left our yard spotless. No need to go after them and pick up a mess. Travis lead the install team and he was fantastic. The whole process was fast, clean and all for a very good price. Well worth it!

They came out and solved a problem that I couldn’t figure out. They discovered that flashing had been installed wrong prior to my buying the house this caused some major damage and water leaking in a window. They answered all my questions and did a great job repairing and improving the roof. Nice workman, on time, cleaned up and hauled away all the debris. The cost was what I was quoted. Very happy with the work.

After looking at my roof for possible storm damage, for insurance, i contracted them to make some repairs and they did an excellent job, including communication, timeliness, and pricing, to name a few. Then later, I had some minor roof damage from a wind storm, and they were able to repair it even earlier than they quoted, for a reasonable price. I couldn't be more happy with their people and service. I highly recommend them.

Dealing with Vaught roofing was very professional. Chris, one of the salesman seemed very knowledgeable about what would be best for our house. He offered up good solid advice for things we might need, or want to consider when replacing the roof. One of the owners handled dealing with our insurance company so we didn't have to. They scheduled the work and had it done in the time frame they had given us. The crew showed up as scheduled and did a great job from start to finish. Overall an EXCELLENT company to deal with that I would definitely recommend to anyone.

Spotted a stain on the ceiling in a bedroom. Assumed it was a leak thru the roof. Called Larry Vaught roofing and a cordial rep came by to look at the damage. Even before he got on the roof he said the leak most likely was due to need to seal the flashing around a toilet vent. He inspected the entire roof, said it was in great shape (18+ years old) and looked good for several more years. Gave a reasonable estimate for re-sealing six vents. Would call them again.

I'm writing this at the request of my father Edward Yeubanks who was quite pleased with the service, attention and care given to his concerns and ease of doing business with a roofing company. After reviewing their bid alongside two other roofers, it was apparent Vaught Roofing was right for us. Dad's review: "My daughters had concerns and took necessary steps to get this project lined up. Projected timelines were reasonable and fortunately the weather was cooperative. They worked on my house two days getting the job done and answering questions as they presented. They worked with a veterans program filing the necessary paperwork and even matched their rebate on good quality shingles we selected which look beautiful."
It gave my father's older property a nice curb appeal, too. I cannot express my thanks for excellent customer service and their patience taking care of the rebate fulfillment and matching it making every dollar count. I truly thank them for their patience in helping us understand the bid and walking us through this process.

I contacted Larry L. Vaught Roofing to install additional down spouts at my resident. A represented from the company gave me the cost for what i wanted them to do, I agreed and a appointed was made. They were on time and not only was the work done in a timely manner the gutters were aligned and cleaned at no additional cost.

I had a heating and cooling issue in my home new home. I felt like the air was just not getting out and AC was running more than it needed to. Come to find out my brand-new home that was built did not have enough roof vents installed for some reason. I search around the area and easily got a quote from Vaught Roofing. In fact, I never even met anyone that did the job for me since my work schedule was so busy to be around the home when they did the estimates and the actual work. So that was a huge plus for me with my time and schedule. They found out my roof did not have enough vents for the sq. footage of the attic. I thought the price was fair and they did a great clean up job after the job was done. You would not even know they were there. So far, it's been a few months since the job and the heating and cooling issues seem to be fixed and more comfortable living in the home. If you are having any issues like mine or problems with your roof you should definitely consider these guys. I know I will in the future. Thanks again for your services.

My family had two leaks that we identified in a recent storm. I contacted this local company and asked for a free estimate of services to repairs the two places on the roof that were leaking. Their communication was prompt, professional, and very clear. Furthermore, the person that explained everything to me after assessing the roof even counseled waiting on certain parts of the repair so that we didn't spend any unnecessary money. How awesome is that? Professionals that give you an honest opinion even if it costs them business. Two men completed the repairs and everything looks great. They also noted that if we continued to have any issues to contact them and they would return. I'm using this company for all future roof issues. Thank you!
