During Larry L. Vaught Roofing Inc.’s 58 years as a roofing company in Kansas City, I have been asked countless times if we work through the winter. My answer has always been “yes we do.” I also explain that we endure as many non-workable days in the spring and fall due to rain as we do in winter due to snow or cold temperatures. Due to the misconception that we cannot work in the winter months, we do not get as many calls for our services in winter. Many roofing companies, including ourselves, are a little more willing to give discounts during the winter months so we can keep our employees busy.

I assume the belief we do not work through winter is due to the misconception that asphalt shingles will not seal down if installed in the winter and result in shingles getting blown off before they can seal down. GAF, North America’s largest asphalt shingle manufacturer states “There is no practical lower or upper temperature limit governing when asphalt fiberglass shingles may be applied, as long as appropriate precautions are taken. In cold weather, for easiest handling, temperatures should be above 40° F. In hot weather, for easiest handling, temperatures should be below 90° F.” Most asphalt shingle manufacturers provide the same 40-degree lower temperature guideline. As GAF says, there is “no practical lower or upper temperature”.

In our 58+ years in business, Larry L. Vaught Roofing, Inc. has learned what weather conditions we are confident in for a quality roof installation. As most people know, a calm, sunny 35-degree day can feel a lot warmer than a cloudy and windy 40-degree day. Since we guarantee our workmanship for 15 years and provide lifetime material warranties, we are highly motivated not to install roofs if we believe the weather conditions are not conducive to a quality installation. Today is February 26th, 2025 and the high temperature is predicted to be 60 degrees in Kansas City, and our roofing crews are working in Kansas City.

Advantages of Winter Roofing

If you are considering replacing your roof, winter is the best time to get a good deal! Many roofing companies, including ourselves, are a little more willing to give discounts during the winter months so we can keep our employees busy.
